How do Neon Signs Work?

The mention of neon signs evokes thoughts of Las Vegas and other glitzy places. But, as an advertising tool, they have proven very effective over the years in a variety of situations and continue to be so.

Despite the increase in popularity of digital signs due to their flexibility, neon signs still have an important role to play. Their vibrant colours and adaptable designs make them a popular choice because they are still able to attract attention and get the desired message across. In many situations, they are a much better option than digital signs and are a cheaper alternative.

The workings and use of neon signs

Neon signs are so called because they have traditionally been made from vacuum-sealed glass tubes that are filled with a small volume of neon gas at low pressure. An electrode at each end of the tube conducts alternating current, which generates sufficient electricity to cause the outer electrons of each neon atom to be removed. The remaining positively charged electrons go to the negative terminal while the free electrons go to the positive one, creating an electric circuit. Certain electrons then have a high energy state that is released as photon light with a distinctive red/orange colour.

Different colours can also be created by treating the glass with a chemical such as phosphor while modern lights use fluorescent lamps with a phosphor coating and a mercury/argon discharge. Colour filters can also be used although this is an unusual method that can create a rainbow of colours depending on the energy level applied.

Neon lights produce a certain amount of heat, generally greater if the tubes are narrow, but not enough to cause any harm and many neon sign makers cover the exposed electrodes at each end of the tube with protective rubber caps. This makes sure the elements are kept dry and also ensures they cannot be touched. Many signs are designed for indoor use only although some are weather-resistant and so are suitable for use outdoors.

The tubes for neon lights are made from thin glass that can be bent to any required shape. This means they can be formed into a variety of shapes that include letters of different sizes and fonts, logos and any combination of designs that you want to be represented by the sign. So, in addition to the variety of colours that can be created, this gives neon signs great flexibility for a variety of uses, which helps to explain their continued popularity.

Design and location for best effect

As well as the design of a neon sign, its location is crucial. Signs sited outside have to be of the appropriate type to withstand the weather and, wherever they are, they need to be seen by appropriate people.

Bright signs with large 3d lettering, vibrant primary colours and simple designs stand out better in bright sunshine so you may need to consider their effect in daylight as well as at night. Signs should also be located for easy maintenance, which will prolong their life, and cooler conditions will also add to the longevity of the tubes.
